Andy's Lymphoma Log

June 28 (Sun):  Just had a lovely storm blow through, which made the rain barrel look just like the picture Andy sent me at work one day earlier in the week.  The subject of her email was a sarcastic, "I think the rain barrel is full".

Tuesday was Andy's 3-month cancer drug maintenance.  Off we went to the hospital at 8 am and returned home after 6 pm.  She had a very good check-up with the doctor.  For details of this and the very long day, I refer you to her Lymphoma Log.  One thing that was very nice was that the ladies to whom we had entrusted our 'Thank You Gift Certificate" had waited till we were there.  They ordered 30 quarter chicken dinners to feed the staff on the floor.  What we had misunderstood was that we were to be included, but by the time the chicken arrived, I had eaten and brought Andy something nice.  Still, it was a kick for us to see the pleasure our gift brought.  They were all very much in a party mood.  This is Adele on the left and Olga on the right.

Andy spent a great deal of the dry, drug-free part of the week working on refinishing the deck, where we spend a great deal of time.

Note the "bridge" going from patio stones at the left end of the deck to the garage door.  Andy banged this together to make sure we didn't tread on her hard work.  We like the deck colour but it does need another coat to even it out. If you look closely at the picture above of Andy painting, you might be able to see a bruise on the outside of her knee and a red mark on the top of her hand by the knuckles.  These are the leftovers from her fall last week.

While Andy worked on the deck, I continued my work on the fence, spending many hours on Saturday painting.  I only have two panels left at the left end, but have to wait for dryer weather again.

Andy liked my special, patent-pending technique.  I was getting completely cooked so broke out the multi-talented beach umbrella.  It's hooked over the fence to keep it in place.  Please pretend you didn't notice the wide load in this pic!

As well as both of us spending a great deal of time with a paint brush (do you like my kitty litter container painting seat?), we both spent a great deal of time weeding over the last few days.  We have this terrible creeping vine that takes over quickly.  Mumsy and Dad know it well as they helped us weed last summer when they were here.  This stuff spreads underground thanks to root offshoots.  Here is one where I actually got almost all the root out.  Shows you how deep it goes - over a foot!

We really need to find out what this stuff is and what to do about it.  If you don't almost constantly weed, it entangles itself around plants, bushes and even the gazebo supports.  I swear it could take over the planet.

Still with gardening, we planted some lilac trees, two in the front on the left side of the house and one in the back yard, rear right corner.

The veggie garden is coming along.  We've had several harvests of the two lettuces and are excited to finally see the tomato plants blooming, baby peppers growing, cucumber vines getting spiky, peas flowering, & radishes radishing.

Last night, we had the twins overnight.  We didn't get them till late after Grace got home from a birthday party, but had enough time for a half hour frantic run around the Dofasco WaterJet Plaza at Spencer Smith Park.  We didn't have the camera, but we were all very pleased to find they've taken out the painful little stones and put in AstroTurf.  My feet genuinely thank whoever is responsible for this!  This morning was spent playing Wii, where Ben was astounded to find himself beat at Baseball.  I just kept smiling at him as he ate his words - that he was going to beat the socks off me.  With light rain, we didn't want to go outside, but Andy and I were short on inside entertainment ideas, so Scot and Monica came to get the kids just after noon.  We did manage to knock off some puzzles.  Ben and Grace let me take their picture with the finished product, but the deal was that if they smiled for one shot, they also got to do a goofy shot.

When the rain finally let up in the afternoon, Andy went up the front maple to do some trimming.  She actually started on the ladder but couldn't reach her targets, so I suggested tree-climbing might run in her family.  Sure enough it does.

Can you spot the monkey?  I had the privilege of cutting up her branch droppings for the Yard Waste bags.  At one point, she got her telescoping trimmer pole stuck and the rope tangled really well, so she had to climb down the one side of the tree and up the other - or it might still have been there 20 years from now.

Oh yah....before I agreed to spot Andy in her tree trimming, I snagged her to help me with a chore I wanted done.  It's only 3 sleeps till Canada Day, so we bodged a flag pole and hung the mighty maple leaf.

Our 10th Anniversary Body Art

Welcome to Heather and Andrea's Web Site. Wouldn't that be a boring title?  However, "Points of Our Compass" has special meaning to us:

There is a poem made famous in a movie, and although the poem, "Funeral Blues" by W. H. Auden, may seem quite morbid, there were words in it that reached out and grabbed us, specifically:

"He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest"

These words inspired us to engrave the points of the compass into our wedding bands rather than a date or initials.  Add to that our feeling that the other gives us direction, is our whole world, and finally, don't discount our craving for, and love of, travel - and there you have our attachment to the "Points of our Compass".

Outside of work, Andrea goes by Andy, therefore that's how she is referred to on this site.
